One human trait — or perhaps it’s more accurate to call it the one human capability — that Einstein prized above all others was something that he called “a holy curiosity.

In fact, in a 1952 letter to one of his biographers, Carl Seelig, Einstein went so far as to claim, “I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”

He also once told LIFE magazine that “the important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when contemplating the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of the mystery every day. The important thing is not to stop questioning; never lose a holy curiosity.”
